Orari, was elected president for the ensuing year.—frets Assoc. A Press Association message from Hokitika reports the death on Tuesday of Mr. Andrew Cmnmings, a settler at Kokatahi, at the age of 77. He was long associated with Westland public affairs, and at the time of hie ds*tfa was a member of the Land Board. After giving the unanimous request pf conference not to retire from the New Zealand Trotting Association full consideration, Mr. P. Selig, who has been chairman of the association since its inception, told a deputation of trotting enthusiastis yesterday that he would accede to their desire and offer himself again for re-election to the boardPress Assoc. The Wellington papers record the sudden death, last Sunday morning, at his home at Karon, of Mr. Robert Caldwell, who for many years was a draughtsman in the Lands and Survey Department, and retired on superannuation only a few months ago. He was at one time stationed at iiew {Plymouth, and was Worshipful Master of JSgamotu Lodge in 1887, in which year he was transferred to Wellington. The late Mr. Caldwell was an active worker in connection with the Anglican Church and a member of the Diocesan Synod. He leaves a widow and family of nine, of whom three sons are at the front and a fourth is now going into camp. One of the most widely-respected of Invercargill's old identities passed away a few days ago, in the person of Mr. James Brown, at the age of 70 years. The deceased was born in Scotland in 1839, arriving at Bluff in the Robert Henderson In 1963. He was then employed as a photographer, but in 1972, three years after its inception, he was appointed secretary of the Southland Ruilding Society and Bank of Deposit. Thjs position Mr. Brown held for 3a years, when he retired to enjoy the rest he had so well earned. Lieutenant (Acting-Captain) James Ferrand Dearden, D.5.0., M.C., who has been awarded a bar to his Military, Cross is an Ashburton County man, and was born at Lowcliffe, 21 years ago, hia mother being a sister of Mr. John Grigg. His brother, Midshipman Percy Dearden, was on board the Queen Elizabeth when the battleship was operating around G'allipoll Subsequently he served on th« Queen Mary, and was on board when the vessel was blown up. Midshipmai Dearden wa 8 rescued by a German de> stroyer, and for 18 months was a pri soner of war in Germany, but is WW interned in Holland.
