CAPTAINS 1 AND DECK OFFICERS' ; m By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. In view of the lapse, on November 30, of the present industrial agreement between the Merchant Service Guild and the Union Company, the Blackball Coal Company, and the Westport Coal Company, the captains and decile officers in the service of those companies are taking steps to obtain all round increases in pay. In the demands for a new agreement, which have already been drawn up by the Guild, substantial increases are sought. The reasons given: are the higher rate of wages ruling in England and elsewhere, and the increased cost of living. The captains' and mates of the coastal steamers are not affected by the movement, as their agreement is for the dotation of the war, GERMAN BELLS TAKEN DOWN, Christchnreh, Last Night. T'he German bells that have hung in the tower of the old German church at the corner of Hereford and Montreal Streets for many years, will be taken down in accordance with the instructions of the acting-tFrime Minister. They were obtained by Mr. Ruddenklau, formerly a prominent citizen of this city and at one time mayor. About forty yeaxs ago he visited Germany. Comparatively a few years after the FrancoGerman war a German church had been established in Ghristchurch, and the bells were made out of French cannon captured during the war, and were presented to Christchurch by Emperor William, grandfather of the present Kaiser. TURNBUIiL'S LIBRARY ACCEPTED. Wellington, Last Night. Cabinet to-day approved of the acceptance of the valuable historical library left to the State by Mr. A. H. Turnbull, and decided to purchase the building in which it is now housed. The library will be controlled by the Government chief librarian, and the general management will be under the Science and Art Board, of which the Minister of Internal Affairs is chairman. DAIRY' FACTORY BDMOD. Gore, July 16. The 'Pyramid Baaiy Factory, near Riv•ersdale, 17 miles from Gore, was burned at 2 o'clock this morning. The origin of the fere is a mystery. The .buildings were insured for ©6OO, the plant for £3OO, and the cheese in stock for £3OO ■with the (Northern Insurance Company.
