fxf. W.-H. Skinner (Crown Lands Commissioner for Canterbury) is on a visit to New Plymouth. It is understood that Mr. 1 J. E. Wilson, S.M., has been appointed temporarily to Greymouth.
Mr. J. McLeod hag been appointed secretary of the New Plymouth Pierrots in place of Mr. R. George, who goes into camp shortly. A Sydney, message reports the death of Majoi» Sir Archibald Lucas Tooth, of pneumonia, on service in France. As deceased was the only surviving son of Sir Robert Lucas, the baronetcy becomes extinct.—Press Association.
At the annual meeting of the Sash and Door Company on Monday afternoon a resolution of sympathy was passed with the relatives o£ the late Private L, Pepperell. an employee of "the company, who i had i > the supreme sacrifice. Mr. (J. Allen, of Efthani, lately a private in the N.Z.E.F., has now received his discharge from the military authori- * ties, and left yesterday to 'take up a position with a well-known advertising agency in Melbourne.
Cable advice has Ijeeu received that Mr. Ulric G. Willia!ms, third son of the qualified at Edinburgh as a Doctor of Medicine, and "was, about to join the New Zealand A'rmy Medical Corps. Mr R. A. Howie, L.L.'B., son of Mr and Mrs Alexandf-r Howie, of Waverley, was admitted last week as a Barrister of the Supreme Court by the Chief Jnttiw. Sir Robert Stout, at Wellington.
The funeral of the late Sev. S. J. Serpell, formerly of New Hymooth, which took place at Thames on Fridaywas largely attended, all sections of thi community being represented. Many visiting ministers were present, including the Revs. W. Lee (Auckland), Blamirea (Hamilton), Dukes (chairman of the district), Olpert (Waihi), and Duncan (Paeroa). Numerous floral tributes wen received. Service wag flr ß t held in th« Wesleyan Church, presided over by th» Rev. W. Lee, who also conducted the 8 orvice at the graveside.
The death of the Rev. Father Dore, S.M., M.C., occurred at Auckland on Monday morning in the Mater Misers* cordia Hospital, from, wounds received at Gallipoli. The reverend gentleman, who was formerly parish priest at FoXton, | went away as ch'aplain with the Main Body. He suffer®! serious injuries to the back and right leg, which wag almost completely paralysed, and it was in the hope of bringing about some degree of recovery that last Wednesday* he underi went an operation. That was apparent* ly successful, but yesterday morning ha collapsed a'nd passed away. Deceased had been 'in New Zealand eig&t years, and was about 33 years of age. . He wai awarded the Military Cross for his bravery 'ft bringing in the wounded under fire.
The funeral of Lieut-Colons! C. F. D. Cook, D.5.0., Wellington Regiment (olarton), who died of cerebrospinal meningitis at Netley Hospital tfLbndon), took place at Reading, where his wife lives.
