The monthly meeting was held hist night. Present: The .Mayor (.Mr. -J. W . il'.MiUau), Crs. J. Ma.ster,;, j}. .J. Malone, It il. Cameron, J. 11. Thompson. C Jackson, T. l.awson, S. B. Hunter, C. Ji. Walsh, and W. -M'Dona Id. Mr. W. Rowson waited on the council in reference to a request made bv bim at the last meeting that the council should extend the drainage to his section in Orlando Street. He understood from the engineer that the work would cost £2O. and he was prepared to pay this provided it was refunded when the drain wont through the street. Mcssr* >S. Ward. A. Rawles. and L. Hilcy, ceneral manager of railways, wrote regarding lavin? of tar macadam 011 railway crossings at Eenton and Regan Streets. The Department were responsible for the maintenance of the streets for 33ft on each side of the crossinirs (not for one chain on each side as some understood), and the Department will adopt the same method for their portion if the council carries out the proposals.—Received. . H. Maclaurin. chief inspector of explosives, notified that the magazine use' 1 by Messrs Masters, Ltd., complied with the regulations. Parry, chief electrical engineer, wrote in reference to the borough electrical engineer (Mr. E. F. Hollands) being called up for military (tuties. Stratford Volrtntcer Eire Brigade expressed their concurrence in The council naming the corps the Stratford Municipal Brigade, and recommended Captain Grui-b as a responsible person to the council for gear and plant.—Received. GENERAL. Mr. J. H. Hopkirk's tender for tarmacadam mixer was accepted. Mr. W. Power was voted £5 os for his work as acting town clerk during Mr. S'-oglund's absence, and a vote of appreciation recorded on the books. The Fire Brigade Committee was empowered to draw up a set of rules for next meeting. The Mayor spoke ttn the success of the welcome home and larewell held in the Town Ilall recent)-. He thought that the social had proved a pronounced success- ne had had a number of photographs of men who had paid the supreme penalty framed, and hoped to see the roll of honor in the Municipal Buildings. The Mayor's action was firmedReports from borough and electrical engineers, abattoirs, and librarian were received and adopted,. The council then adjourned. GENERAL. . Radnor Road settlers and others mustered in large numbers at the schoolhouse last week to farewell Miss Broen, who has been in charge of the school during the past four years ,and is leaving to join a training college in Wellington. Mr. Crowe, chairman of (he School Committee, in presenting Miss Breen with a manicure set, expressed the appreciation of the district for the very succccssful results secured by the scholars, which, although only a small school, scored a high percentage of profie'cney certificates. Mr. Davis al-ospoke in high terms of .Miss Breen's work' Musical items were contributed by Mrs. 11. Taylor. Miss Davis, and Messrs Mapp, Askew, Davis, and 11. Taylor. Miss ITuee and Mr. W. J. Neilson supplied tho music for the dance. The Stratford Patriotic Committee is out for the Copper Trail fund'. A start will bo made on Saturday, when it is hoped that a good sum wilt be secured for the purpose. ROWAN RED CROSS DAY. The Rowan Red Cross day held in Stratford proved very successful, a total of oyer £7O being taken. A lunch held previously at Kaponga realised a profit •)f £0 :js, the concert" £7 1 ."is, and buttonholes over £2- Tiie football wr.s won by Mrs. Horace Mellow, and tho table centre by Gladys Ilislop. The cake weight-guessing was won by M|s. Boon, Mrs. Wiiittington, Mr. .Mellow, and S. Mehow all guessing 101b, the actual weight being 101b loz. The lion, secretary wishes especially to thank Mrs. Browning, Mrs. Lannes, Miss liietiuvark, Miss Riley, and Miss L. .Tames, who came forward with help. The committee consisted of Mrs. Dovle, Mrs, M. Steiner, Mrs. J. Bartlett, Mr 3. Xeilson, Miss Doyle, Miss .Tames, Mrs, Mundy (secretary), and Miss, E- Mundy and Glady Bartlett (button-holes). There are many visitors to Stratford who make no mistake, in that whenever they are in search of jewellery, fanoy goods, Poulton ware, immediately make their purchases at C. E. .James' warehouse. The proprietor has recently made large additions to his stock, and is offer, ing same to the public at prices that defy competition. Inquire about the f-can comb and cutter combined.
