NEW PLYMOUTH BOROUGH COUNCIL.

MONTJiLV MEETING. The monthly meeting of the New Plymouth Borough Council was held last night- Tho Mayor (Mr. C. 11. Burgess) presided, and there, were also present: Crs. (!. W. Browne, R. J. Deare, W. A. Collis, W. F. Short, F. J. Hill, J. W. Hayden, and J. Clarke. OFFIOAL REPORTS. The official reports of the various departments, and also committee reports, which have already been published, were received and adopted. In considering the Works Committee's report, Cr. Hayden moved and Cr- Collia seconded—"That tho clause relating to the residents of Rainsford Street being asked to contribute half-cost of metalling the road as far as Mr. Thompson's property, be rescinded." Both mover and seconder urged that it was wrong in principle and unfair to the property ow : ners that they should be asked to contribute half-cost of metalling a strip of road that was really a main road and was used more by other people than those resident in the locality. It was a cattle track authorised by the borough, and by which drovers were obliged to bring stock. They considered that the road was one which really required a lftTge sum spending upon it, The Mayor endorsed the sentiments expressed, and the clause was deleted. WORKS COMMITTEE. A meeting of the Works Committee was subsequently held, when the following business was transacted :«- Permission was given to the Taranaki Amusements, Ltd., to erect a temporary stage at the Empire Theatre on July 22 to 2-1, for the Scarlet Troubadours, and on August 7 and 8 for the Fisk Jubilee Singers. Application was made by Messrs Boon Bros, for permission to erect additions in wood to the present Convent buildings.—The borough inspector reported that tho building was within the "brick area," and its erection would be in contravention of by-law No. 444. It was decided to refuse the application. Permission was given to tho engineer to close Courtenay Street, between Liardot Street and Carrington Road, during repairs.
