A LICENSING APPLICATION. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Opotiki, July ]-'2, An application was made by John Peables to the Bay of Plenty Licensing (onmiitUe yesterday for an accommodation license at Taneatua. Air. Elliott appeared for the applicant, and Mr. Selwyn Mays, on behalf of the police, opposed the application. After hearing evidence, the committee retired for 40 minutes. The chairman, 3lr. Dyer, S.M., then announced that the license had been carried, the four elected members voting for it, while lie voted against it. CLOSING THE LIQUOR TRADE. Christehurch, .Tnly 12. An efficiency campaign having for its object the closing of the liquor trade with compensation, was launched last night at a public meeting. Tho Mayor presided, and a motion proposed by the Rev. E. S. Gray was carried expressing strong approval of the proposals of the New Zealand Alliance and pledging those present to do all in their power to make the campaign a success. ALLEGED ASSAULT ON LITTLE GIRLS. Marlon, July 12. At the Marlon Court yesterday, John •Henry Brookes, music teacher, of Ohingaiti, was committed for trial to the Wanganv.i Supreme Court on five charges of assaulting three little girls under eleven years of age. The case occupied till 11 .10 last night. Bail was allowed in =elf £IOO and two sureties of C2OO each. THE PRICE OF BREAD. Dunedin, July 12. The Board of Trade, now sitting in Dunedin, has fixed bread prices for the city as follows: —Cash over counter, Old for 411- loaf; private delivery, cash lOd, ditto booked lO'/.d These prices are the same as those ruling at present and fixed by the board for Christcliurch.
