CURTAILMENT OF EXPENDITURE.
DISCUSSED BY NAPIER HARBOR BOARD. Napier, fvly 9. The need for the curtailweni pf eipsaditure was the keynote of #ll "the dhicaisions at today's Kapler Harber Bond meeting, and was emphasised by a committee reporting on applications for Jfc* creases of salary. The report f fctodt "The committee is also of opinion pat the question of our falling menus stands out prominently, as also does the fact that increases have already been made in spme of our dues. With the certainty of further additional charges on goods and shipping being necessary, therefore, hingeing on the subject under review, your committee sinks that power should be given to sSjnqJttmeously make recommendations with a view to retrenchment." At another stage in the meeting, and for similar reasons, the board deferred the purchase of a new pilot launch. The position as defined by the board may be summed up by the remark of one speaker, who said: "It is evident that our local bodies in New Zealand will have to look into their expenditure and go in for curtailment."
