NEW PLYMOUTH BOROUGH COUNCIL.

WORKS COMMITTEE. The Works Committee of H* New Plymouth Borough Council BWt last night. There were present: His worship the Mayor (Mr- C. H. Burgess) and Crs. G. W.. Browne, R. S. Deare, E. Griffiths, W. F. Short, J. W. Hayden, and JClarke. CORRESPONDENCE. ' - ; The borough engineer wrote to tin council respecting the jmjtsMl fox strengthening and lengthening the small bridge In Street. As the worli was likely to cost a fairly large sum, he submitted an alternative scheme em* bracing the ereoiiqp of an entirely new bridge. The seetipd scheme was estimated to oost no more than £ls 15s more than the first proposal, with the advantage of a better bridge whioh would be the property of the council. A discussion took place on the merits of the two schemes, during the course of which reference was made to an estimate that the engineer had made on a previous occasion for the metalling of the Devon line west as far as Mr. Thomson's property. The improvement of the bridge, it was pointed out, would benefit only one property-holder, whereas if the road was metalled as well more people would be benefited, and some assistance might be secured from the residents. It was eventually resolved, on the motion, of Crs- Browne and Deare, to metal, the Devon line as far as Mr. Thompson's, provided the residents contribute halt the cost. An application wag made ;lby Bellringer Bros, for permission to store benzine in a store at Vogeltown. A similar application was deceived from C. Carter. —Permission granted on the anal conditions. Mr. T. Smith, borough turncock, wrote that he had been passed as fit and ordered into camp in September. He reminded the council that he wu entitled to a month's holiday, and he a»ked that he be granted the leave More gotqg to camp—The council decided to grant the month's leave.
