A Paris cablegram states that Mahomed VI, the late Sultan's brother," has succeeded to the throne.
Mr. J. C. Watkins, «f the Union Co., is on furlough prior to going into the CI Camp.
The death occurred at Christchurch a few days ago of Mr. Hill, father of Cr. F. J. Hill and Mr. H. E. Hill, of New Plymouth. Word was received yesterday morning that Mr. David Teed, sen., who has been in ill-health for a long time, had died in Auckland.
The rate clerk (Miss M. Arthur) forwarded her resignation to the Borough Council last night, on account of her leaving to reside in Auckland. The death took place on Friday of Mrs. H. Ellerm, of Glenn Road, Manaia, at the age of 74 years. Mr. Henry Barlow, of the same place, also died on Friday, aged 78 years. Prior to taking the business at iast night's meeting of the New (Plymouth Borough Council, on the motion of the Mayor a resolution of sympathy was passed with Cr. Hill in the death of his father.
Mr. J. Blair Mason, consulting engineer to the New Plymouth Harbor Board, is in town. A special meeting of the board will be held on Wednesday to discuss with him the plans of the proposed harbor improvement scheme. Mr. D. Newsam, of New Plymouth, yesterday received advice that his son, Private Charles Spencer Newsam, of the Ninth Reinforcements, was admitted to hospital in France on June 23, in consequence of being wounded and gassed. Private Newsam had previously been wounded at the Somme and slightly gassed at Messines.
Mrs. and Miss Jones, the wife and daughter of Mr. H. E. Jones, manager of the Gisbonoe branch of Messr* Saigood, Son, and Ewen, are among the missing passengers from the s.s. Wimmera. Mr. Jones was for many years the commercial representative >f the firm in Taranaki, and foe will have the deepest sympathy of many fnends throughout this district. Rev. J. W. Burton is touring New Zealand this year as Foreign Mission deputation. Since leaving New .Plymouth some years ago he has resided in Melbourne, carrying out the duties of secretary to the Foreign Mission Board. He has been released for three months to visit the Dominion and assist in raising £15,000 for the foreign mission fund this year. He will preach in Whiteley Church on Sunday next, morning and evening, giving an address in Everybody's Theatre in the afternoon.
