ELTHAM.

(From Our Own Codrespondent.) Eltham, July 8. Mr. C. A. Wilkinßon, lIP., had the members of his staff at his residence last week, when presentations were made to Private A- Lee (carter), Gill (motor), E. Carter (hardware),P. Chinnery (grocery;, employees in Wilkinson, Ltd., who have been called up in the ballot and will shortly be leaving for camp. Mr. Wilkinson informed the men that the firm would make up the difference in Government pay and allowance to the salary previously earned by each member—an announcement that caused great contentment amongst the men, which was increased when it was stated that the firm would immediately re-engage the men on their return from the front. Taranaki could do with a few more employers like the mem'ber for Egmont. When a man is leaving the district, his friends oftimes find it a diSealt matter to strike on the right gift to their comrade. Recently Mr. J. Taylor, one of tie road foremen to the Eltbam County, severed his connection with that body, and his comrades looked round for a suitable gift, and found one. Consequently they met at his house last week. Mr. Soarle, one of the workers, made a little speech, reminiscent of road days, and then handed his guest a tailor-made wlit of clothes. Whilst the recipient wa3 getting on the suit and roping in his thoughts, another worker, K. Thomas, surprised the wife by presenting her with a lady's handbag. By the time cheers and "He's a Jolly Good Fellow'" had rung in the rafters, Mr. J- Taylor had recovered sufficiently to thank his late assistants for their thoughtful aiy] generous gift to him and his wife. A further round of cheers and a handshake and the party dispersed.
