A Washington cable states that Senator Tillman, chairman of the Naval Committee, has died of paralysis. A Press Association cable from Mont- j real states that Eon. G. Fen wick has ar- ] rived there, and that the other New Zealand editors journeying to France have reached a Pacific port. In the latest hospital report the following Taranaki names appear:—Removed from dangerously ill list, C. D. Ingram (tPatea). _ Not severe cases: Lanoe-Corporal R. S- Carlson (Blth&m), H. H. Curtis (liaglewood), J. E. Harding ('Pitzroy), W. Harper (Hawera), L. W. Sturmey (New Plymouth), and L, M. Walker (Midhirat). Lieutenant A. Smith,- well .known in New Plymouth and throughout Taranaki generally as a representative iootballef and cricketer, who recently returned from the front, was given a welcome home in the Batapiko School on Friday evening. There was a very large attendance of residents of the district and visitors from Tariki, Kaimata, Inglewood, and Tarata. Mr. Oarr, actingchairman, in a happy speech, presented Lieutenant Smith with an illuminated address. Lieutenant Smith, in the course of his reply, advised those sending gifts to send them direct to their own boys. During the evening musical items were given by Misses Bunyan, Sattler, M*Lean, Messrs Price, Chong, and Sergeant-Major Williamson. Messrs Chong and Morrison made capable M.'sC. cxoollent music being provided by Misses Williams and Mr. Egaar, extras foeinfl given by Misses Bunyan and Sattler.
