EFFICIENCY BOARD TRUSTEES

WEEKLY MEETING. The New Plymouth trustees of the Efficiency Board held their weekly meeting yesterday, when there were present: Messrs T. Furlong (chairman) and E. Whittle. Mr. F J Hill, who is still in Christchurch on business, apologised for his absence. Eleven cases were considered, and the applicants were recommended to the persons or departments mostly interestedIn addition to the above, several others waited on the board in connection with various matters affecting their interests. A soldier ou leave, who owned a general store, asked for the assistance ef the board in disposing of the business. He stated the reasons for not selling prior to going into camp, and said that he now had a probable purchaser in view, and thought that if he could get an extra fortnight's leave, the transaction could be completed. The chairman stated that he had approached the Military Service Board, but the military representative had told him the iboard had no jurisdiction in the matter, and that application must be made to the Camp 1 Commandant or the Director «f Recruiting.

The representative of a large local industrial concern waited on the board in relation to the head of one-of his departments who had been called up, and stated that if the man had to go into camp it would mean the closing of the bvliiness and throwing some 30 or 40 other men out of employment.—The board decided to bring the matter under the notice of the Commissioner in Wellington, with a view to affording some assistance.

A prominent local farmer asked for advice respecting his position as a Second Division reservist. He had a sharemilker manager on his farm, and both were liable to be drawn in the same ballot, and be desired to prepare for such a contingency. The board made suggestions which it considered would meet the difficulty should it arise. A soldier who had recently returned from the front sought the board's assistance in securing some light employment, and the secretary took the matter in hand, and will give what assistance is posssible. An amount of correspondence from the Wellington Commissioners, relative to. matters referred to them by the local board, was also dealt with.
