THE FINANCIAL POSITION. BRITAIN AND GERMANY CONTRASTED. London, July 3, Lord Emmott, speaking on the Finance Bill in the House of Lords, said that Germany relatively had not made half our effort to meet the financial burdens of the ivar. We were not only meeting the cost, but providing to pay off a portion of the national debt. If the war lasted very mucli longer he should view the position with apprehension, but ho should view it, if we were in the German case, with absolute terror. It was now certain that Germany would get no indemnities, and she was working towards bankruptcy, which would possibly result in serious internal trouble. When the people who made the war had to pay for it, it might chasten the German spirit. Lord Hylton, replying to a question, said the Government proposed to appoint a Royal Commission to consider the desirability of a change in the coinage system.—Aus. N.Z. Cable Assoc.
GERMAN CONSPIRACY. London, July 3, The International Parliament Conference passed a resolution urging the Entente Governments' adoption at the earliest moment of adequate measures to defeat the German conspiracy to dominate the trade of the world, including dumping, espionage, and other practices. and recommending the establishment of an inter-Allied Entente of Commerce for the purpose.—Renter/ THE INFLUENZA EPIDEMIC. London, July 3, Influenza is spreading in Britain. The staffs of many office?, shops, and factories are much depleted, and many schools are closed.
