AMERICA'S EFFORT.; 'j \ A i.ONDERFUL RECORD, Washington, July 8, The Secretary for War sent a letter to President Wilson detailing America's war efforts and showing that over a million troops have sailed for France. Starting with 1918 men in May, 1917, the numbers sent monthly steadily increased to 270,382 sent in June, 1918. Besides soldiers, 14,744 marines were sent, making a total of 1,019,115, while the total number returned from abroad, and casualties up to that date was 8105. Owing to the superbly efficient protection afforded by the navy in transporting, only 291 had been lost at sea. The letter states that supplies and equipment for all the troops sent was adequate, and in the output of war industries America was displaying a marked improvement in practically all lines necessary for equipment and supplies. President Wilson, acknowledging the letter, says it is a record which must give universal satisfaction because the heart of the country is unquestionably in the war.—Aus. N.Z. Cable Assoc.
AMERICA'S NATIONAL DAY. MESSAGE FROM NEW ZEALAND. Wellington, July 4. The Acting-Prime Minister has sent to-<lay the following telegram to Mr. Winston, Auckland, Consul-General for the United States: "On this 4th day of July I am sure all New Zealanders rejoice to know that the great American people are with them in the fight for freedom. From my window I see the flags of the United Kingdom and the United States of America flying side by side on the cross bar at the head of the flag staff, emblematic, as it seems to me, of the determination of these two great nations, in concert with our mutual allies, to see that the scales of liberty, truth, and justice are evenly balanced, not only now but for all time."
