ELTHAM.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Eltham, July 4. The Oddfellows held their half-yearly meeting last evening, and the competition for the various positions as officers for the next term was very keen. there being opposition for every position. The District Grand Master (Bro. Roberts, New Plymouth) was present, and al3o PD.GM. Bro. T. Lawson (Stratford). The visitors installed the officers for the following half-year as under:—G.M., Bro. Clements; N.G., Bro. Simmons; V.G., Sis. Sorbie; E.S-, Sis- E. Stanners; Warden, Sis. Thornhill; G.', Sis- Phillips. This lodge has had a great revival in making members, and the strength of the Order is in keeping with previous days when it was the only benefit society in Eltham. The increase in membership has been mainly in ladies, and they are taking a big interest in the Order, and as a result things are booming, last night the attendance being over 60, which must be considered very good for this time of the year. The Borough Council'has for some time been considering the library and reading room question, but up to the present it has teen a case of marking time only, and no forward movement is apparent, as the matter has been referred to the Finance Committee to report. In tho past the Library Commlttee'has done its best to push things along, but a visit to the reading room shows things very unsatisfactory, the supply of reading matter being very poor. A small rate would effect manv improvements and certainly would not be objected to by ratepayers.
