A London cable states that Lord Rhondda's heart shows signs of failure. The members No. 1 Wellington Military Service Board leave for Hawora this morning, where they will sit for two days, and then proceed to Wanganui. Mr. W. T. Ward, chief postmaster at Christchureh, retired from active association with the Department as from Saturday, At the Egmont Box Factory's works at Eltliam on Monday a presentation of a pocket wallet and razor strop was made to Private N. Philpott, late of the staff, who is home on, final leave. The Eltham Argus states that Mr. C. E. Major, formerly MJP. for Hawera, intends contesting the Parnell seat at the> next general election.
In the latest hospital report .published the following Taranaki' names are given: —Removed from dangerously ill list, A. E, Speck (Stratford). Not severe cases, J. B. Cwwsan (Stratford) and J. D. Eowe (Eltham). Advice has been received from the head office in Melbourne of the Hud-dart-Parker Co., of the death of Mr. John Traill, on Wednesday last, at tho age of 9?. Mr. ; Traill was the last of the original founders of the HuddaitParker Company. The Greymouth Star understands that the Government have offered Mr. Ton? (Pollard, and he has accepted, the pos ; - tion of controller of the Amu-iemeLt Tax for the Dominion. Mr. Pollard, who is well-known throughout the Dominion, has for some years been conducting a J picture show in Qreymouth.
The death occurred &. Friday, at the age of 79 years, of a very well kaswn f>nd deeply respected resident of Wellington in the person of Mr. W. S ; mm, manager of the D.I.C. The late Mr. Simm was for many years in the service of Messrs W. and 6. Turnbull, Ltd, and, by a peculiar coincidence, died on the same day as his old chief, Mr. A. "&. Turnbull.
A quiet wedding took place on June 20, when Maude BUatbeth Leigh, of Hawera, third daughter of the late P. A. Leigh, and grand-daughter of the late General E. T. Leigh, of Devonshire, England, was married to Mr. A. C. Johnston, youngest son of Mrs. Johnston, Patea. Miss Eileen Leigh acted as bridesmaid, and Mr. W. Psirker, brother-in-law of the bride, as best man. After the ceremony, Mr, and Mrs. Johnston left by motor for the south, where their honeymoon will be spent-
Mr. Sourness, manager of the Co-op. Dairy Factory Co., has resigned his posjiion to join the Government grading staff. The directors of the company met on Tuesday to say farewell to Mr. Sounness, and their chairman (Mr. George Death) expressed their sin. cere regret at losing so capable an official and one who wag so universally liked and respected. In appreciation of his excellent services to the company, th« directors presented Mr. Sounness with a cheque for quite a substantial sum. Mr. Sounness was previously in the Government service, and it is a great compliment to him aijd a distinct acquisition to the Dairy Division staff that he has ibeen selected to fill a vacancy on j the staff.—Star.
