FALSE PRETENCES.
' MAN COMMITTED ,JX)R SENTENCE. A man named Thomas Wtiteley, on remand from Palmerston North, appeared before Mr. A. Orooke, S.M., yesterday, at New Plymouth, on charges of false pretencesHie first charge was of obtaining £5 from Alfred Davies, licensee of the Central Hotel, Patea, by means of a valueless cheque. The occurrence took place in December, ,1916. Davies related the incidents connected with the fraud, and stated incidentally that accused still owed him £2 12s for board- A. C. St. Paul, teller of the New Plymouth branch of the Bank of Australasia, also gave evidence. Accused pleaded guilty, and was committed for sentence.
The second charge was of obtaining £2O 10s by false pretences from A. E. Kronlc, at New (Plymouth, on or about December 6, 1916. Accused admitted the offence, and was committed for sentence on the second charge also.
