The comedian of the evening was Mr. A. Howlett, his charac-' tar songs being of a versatile nature. He created a good deal of merriment, and was encored on each appearance. The dramatic element of the entertainment was introduced to the first half by a comedietta, given by the Misses K. Leathain, W. 'and B. Crooke, entitled "Releasing a Man." The com,lle ™ayed by the titled ladles in their attempt to take up civil employment, and bo release men for active service. The difficulties of a "lady" who could §!L no ® ne J® cl ean her windows, and tho ef-r iOTtl of a ''duchess" in the role of a hired window-cleaner, were cleverly acted, as was the part of the housemaid who refused to do i work outside her particular sphere. The comedy with which the programme concluded showed the fear of a party of young ladles spendl in? ft week-end in the country house of a i friend, consequent upon a rumor that a bur|gl*r had entered a neighboring house. The I scare created after the retirement of the ladies I W their rooms, and the subsequent Tesolve to bring the supposed burglar out of his hiding, accompanied by a great deal of screaming of feminine character, reached its *»»»*■ wnefi the bravest of the quintette ventured into ft? room » and came forth with tie ® £ at - The dramatis personae were the Misses Leatham (2), Crooke (2) and Webster. | Th* stage, which was prettily decorated, was ; furnished by Mr. c.
