SCHOOL ATTENDANCE.
ALLEGED IRREGULARITIES. At yesterday's meeting o£ the Taranaki Education Board, the chairman (Mr ■R. Masters) drew attention to a report on what amounted to irregularities in connection with the attendance of certain pupils at the Inglewood Convent, who, on account of having to travel to and from the school by train, really only put in 2£ hours school time,, and were given credit for full attendances. He said the same thing, in a lesser degree, also applied to the Eltham Convent. It was a matter which the board should deal with urgently, as it was a breach of the regulations to mark a child present when not actually at school. Mr. C. A. Wilkinson, MP., said he looked upon the matter as most serious, and one in which the board should take immediate action. He moved that a copy of the inspector's repojjjt be forwarded to the Inglewood Convent, and that an explanation be asked for. The motion was seconded by Mr. S. G. Smith, and carried. Mr. Masters also drew attention to the irregular attendances at the Urcnui school, and on his motion it was resolved to ask the truant officer to make a special report on the attendances at the Eltham CQnvent and the Urenui School.
