DISTRICT MEDICAL BOARD.
*g* RETURNED SOLDIERS EXAMINED. A District Medical Board, comprising Captain W. R. Wade, N.Z.M.C., and Dr. E. F. Fookes, of New Plymouth, sat at the Coronation Hall yesterday and dealt with 38 returned soldiers- The board was occupied from 9 am. to 3.15 p.m., and the number of returned men examined constituted a record for the group. Of those boarded, 14 were discharged, 11 were made out-patients at the New Plymouth and Ha/wera hospitals, two were ordered to continue as in-patients at the New Plymouth Hospital, three were ordered to receive treatment at Rotorua, three at Cambridge, and one at Lowry Bay, while four were placed on sick leave. The board's duties consist of examining the men, and of determining their state of health at the time of examination. If further medical treatment is not required, the soldier will, unless likely to bo fit within six months for further service overseas, (be discharged. The discharge takes effect 21 days after the date of the holding of the board. The soldier returned invalied and requiring medical treatment i is not discharged, but is recommended for treatment as an out-patient at the hospital nearest to his place of residence, or for treatment in an institution where he is likely to gain most benefit. These recommendations take effect immediately or as sbon as arrangements can be made for their accommodation and transfer. Out-patients at a hospital are discharged when the board < onsiders they are able to undertake < ome civil employment and recommend? discharge.
