TRAMCAR LEAVES THE RAILS

DASHES TOWARDS FOOTPATH. Wellington, Last Night. A double-decker tram car left the rails at the junction of Lambton Quay with Featherston Street, this evening, when travelling at a fairly high speed, and dashed towards the footpath. The motorman applied the brakes, but failed to stop the car before it struck the curb. It smashed two iron verandah posts a:rl' considerably damaged the verandah. Fortunately the car contained fet. - passengers. All were thrown from thei; seats, and two ladies were carried into the Central Hotel and medically attended to. One of them (Mrs. O'Lcary) was found to have a broken leg, and the other lady was-seriously shaken but able to go home. The motorman, who stuck to bis post, was uninjured. The car was less damaged than might have been expected. There is no apparent cause for the car leaving the raib.
