A London message reports that General Smith-Doreen has been appointed Governor of Gibraltar. The name of M. Potroz (W&itara) appears in the list of not severe cases in the latest hospital report. Mr. and Mrs. A. E. "Washer, old settlers of the Alton district, are taking up their residence in New Plymouth shortly. The following Taranaki names appear in the latest ballot of Maoris for military service: Hone Armstrong (Mokau), Rangihiroa Maniopoto (Mahoenui), Heta Phillips (Mokau), Teriri Pukere (Mokau), Takirau Rildhana (Mokau), and Te Wetiri (Pungarehu). Mr J. J. Pickett, Chief Postmaster at Gisbome, has been appointed to take charge at Timaru. Mr Pickett joined the Post and Telegraph service on his arrival in the Dominion 45 years ago, and since then he has been Postmaster at Charleston, Carterton, Foxton, Waipawa, Stratford, Tauranga, Thames and Gißborne. He will be succeeded at Gisborne by Mr. H. D. Grocott, at present Chief Postmaster at Oamam. The funeral of the late Mr. H. Autridge took place at Te Henui Cemetery yesterday. The local veterans, of whom deceased a member, paraded and poined the cortege- The service at the graveside was conducted by the Ven. Archdeacon Evans, and at the conclusion the "Last Post" was sounded by Mr. T- Hughes, who acted for Bugler Walker, owing to the tatter's indisposition. Tariki turned out in full force on Friday evening last to farewell, Mr. and Mrs. Stephenson and family, who are leaving that district. Mr. Stephenson had a long association with Tariki, taking a leading part in all its activities, and, though well on in years, volunteered for service and went through the Somme and Messines battles. The settlers spoke. very highly of Mr. Stephenson and fatally, and presented them with a valuable 4 tea service.
