Referring to the reported increase in passenger r»Us across t&» Pacific from America to New Zealand and Australia, the Postmaster-Qeuera] said lie under-, stood that there was to be a general increase on &U faTes in British ships, and the first advice was that this would a.pply also to trans-Pacific ships. Since then the Government had contradictory reports, and was conferring with the Union Company to see what the position was .exactly. The Government was directly interested, because the condi* tipns under which the subsidy to the Vancouver service was paid might be affected. One of the conditions of the pftywnt of the subsidy was that passengers should be carried at certain rates.
