LOSS OF AUSTRIAN BATTLE- , SHIP. ADMITTED BY THE AUSTfiIANS. Received June 14, 1 a.m. Berne, June 12. It is officially admitted in Vienna that the battleship Szent Istvan was torpedoed and sunk in the Adriatic, several of the officers and eighty of the crew being missing.—Press Association.
SUBMARINE PERIL DECLINING OFFENSIVE MEASURES NOW FULLY EFFECTIVE. Received June 14, 1.40 p.m. London, June 13. The Times' naval correspondent states that the submarine peril is declining. We are approaching the equilibrium between the destruction and replacement. The official losses to April, 1918, total 1,447,832 tons. The Anglo-American output to May was 1,112,078 tons. The offensive measures planned ftt the beginning of 1917 are now fijlly effective.—Press Association. U-BOAT EXHLOITS. 1 Received June 13, 7.40 p.m. New York, Juno 12. There arc many unofficial reports of the exploits of U4joats, but these are not confirmed by the' Navy Department. ■ Two steamers report that they were attacked by U-fboats off the Virginia coast on Sunday. The passengers on a Brazilian vessel report firing off the coast on Tuesday morning, and suggest that the mothers ship may be at Sargossea Crasty.—Pfess Assoc.
