Mr. Hurley, frcretary for the Navy, in a speech stated that the Shipping Board controls 1400 ships, with a tonnage of seven million. It is expected that by the end of 1920 America will have a merchant marina of 25 million deadweight tons. The fleet involves an expenditure of five billion dollars. A trans-Atlantic liner sank a U-boat •with a depth charge in European waters and also hit the conning tower of another. Captain MacKenzie and sixteen of the crew of the Pinar-del-Rio fought rough for twelve hours without food or water in a small leaking boat, which when picked up was in a sinking condition, with its gunwales nearly level with the water. The survivors of the Pinar-del-Rio state that a U-boat signalled its mothership: "Follow me." Then both hastened away.
