DISTRICT NEWS.
MANGOREL (From Our Own Correspondent*) A representative gathering of Mangorei folk met in the Upper School on Friday evening to bid farewell to Private Cyril Jury, who was on final leave. A concert given by local talent was very much enjoyed, several items being heartily encored The chairman, Mr. Pearcc, addressing tiie guest of the evening, said that the two years he had been on the Board he had earned the goodwill and respect of everyone, arid on behalf of Mangorei folk he wished him good luck and, after doing his bit, lie could assure him a hearty welcome back to the district again. A roll of honor was being compiled of those who had sonc from the district and of the 38 names two had returned. Seven had made the supreme sacrifice. Two young ladies were then called upon to make a presentation of a fountain pen and silver cigarette case. Private ■Jury, in responding, said that he hod spent two happy years there and he would like to thank one and all for their many kindnesses to him. Aftef singing "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow," three cheers wore given for the boys at the front, followed by the National Anthem After supper dancing was carried on till the wee small hours, Mr. Bart Herbert acting efficiently as M.C. IiAPUNT (From Our Own Correspondent-) There was a large gathering at Mr. J F. Stevenson's farm on the occasion of the sports held to raise money to wipe out the debt on the Kapvini Hall. During the day prizes were awarded to: Trotting and jumping events:— G Samson (Tasman) 1, Crocker (Tarpot) 2; J. Patterson (Bonny) 1, C. Patterson (Flora) 2; N Duggan (Mona) 1; farm horse, W. McCook (Barnev) 1. Wrestling.—A Duggan, M. Bradford. Maiden chop.—R Tremain. Donkey race. —D Hennessey, Pillow fight—J Green 1, J. McCarty 2 Running race—R. Hooper 1, M. Wright 2. The refreshment stall did good business, being in the capable hands of Mesdames J. Patterson, McKenna, Sharp, C. Patterson, W. Taylor, F. Atkins and Misses White and Kissick. The lollie stall was tended by Misses L. Sharp and M Spiers The social held •in the evening was also largely attended and great interest was taken' in the waltzing competition, which was won by Mr. and Mrs F. Hughes and Mr. T 'Parkes and Mrs W. Hughes were 2nd. Good dance music was supplied by Miss Gardiner, while extras were plftyed by Misses Melville, Taylor and Spiers, * and Messrs G. Lor ell and W. Hacket-t (violin). Messrs W. Johnson and J. Willis capably acted as M'sC., whilst the supper was provided by Mr. Gee, of Manaia. The local hall is now free of debt.
