THE SEAMY SIDE OF RACING. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Napier, Last Night. At the Supreme Court, Frederick Hampson and James Willoughby, charged with conspiring to defraud Maori women of £l9 at the last Hawkcs Bay races* and who were alternatively charged with obtaining money by false pretences, in that they received money to put on a horse, representing themselves as the owner and trainer, and refused to show the totalisator tickets, were found guilty on the latter charge, with a recommendation for mercy for Willoughby, a Wellington boardinghouse keeper, who was influenced by Hampson. Sentence was postponed. CONCILIATORY EFFORTS OF MINISTER. Napier, June 11. Hon. G. W. During the March quarter of 1018 the amount advanced to settlers by the State Advances Department was £82,334, the amount repaid by settlers being £117,370. Advances to workers for the same period amounted to £23,705,, and the repayments £35,681.
