DAIRY INDUSTRIES.

THE SOUTH ISLAND ASSOCIATION. Christchurch, June 5. At the annual meeting of the South Island Dairy Association to-day, it was decided that the expenses of the delegates and committee in connection with the sale of the outputs of butter and cheese be paid by the South Island Dairy Association, the executive to be authorised to pay them or to make a levy as decided by the directors. It was also decided that the association pay the expenses of the South Island representatives who recently visited Australia in connection with sales of butter. The following resolution wa3 carried:—"That this conference urge on the Government the necessity for conserving what little timber still remains for New Zealand requirements, and that the export of timber of all sorts be prohibited and afforestation proceeded with seriously." After a lengthy discussion, in the course of which comment wa3 made on the action of the Otago Military Service Board in dismissing all appeals for butter and cheese factory managers, it was resolved: —'That this meeting of dairymen protests against the continued conscription of competent daily factory managers and competent first assistants in opposition to the Efficiency Board's finding that dairying la essential, and recommends that immediate steps no taken to ensure that enough men are left to carry on the industry; that we thoroughly approve of the letter forwarded 'to the Minister of Defence, and request his favourable and prompt attention to the same, and that a re-hearing of the recent cases where appeals were dismissed be authorised.'' The conference t'runimously passed a vote of appreciation of the conduct of the Bluff Harbor Board, in dealing with the coofl storage question at the Bluff. After lengthy discussion, a remit, asking the association to take into consideration the possibility of purchas. ing the Bluff cool stores was withdrawn. The election of directors resulted in the return of Messrs T. Parker (Stirling), E. Lord (Canterbury Central), J. R. Thacker (Okains), and J. S. Grieve (Waianiwa.)
