ABSENT WITHOUT LEAVE.

EXAGGERATED REPORTS. (From -Our Own Correspondent.) Wellington, June 6: Exaggerated reports have teen published regarding title absence without leave of certain soldiers of the senior reinforcement now in camp, the «JBtb Reinforcement. The men of the 38th draft received their long leave at Easter time, unusually early in their period of training. They considered that they ought to have a later opportunity of visiting their homes, and last week they presented, their case in an orderly way to the Camp Commandant at Trentham. The reply, given a day later, was that long leave could not be repeated, but that all the men of the draft would be given week-end leave, from Saturday until Monday. The men went out of camp on Saturday, and some of them openly announced their intention of not returning on Monday. The reports that have been published appear to have been based on these statements. The actual number ef absentees on Tuesday morning was 300 out of a total strength of about 850 men who had received leave. Nearly all the absentees returned to camp during Tuesday and Wednesday, and the strength of the draft to-day is normal. They state that the discipline of the 38th draft generally has been very good.
