"Paddy'' Eva has accepted the position of private trainer to Mr. Harold brown, of Wellington, and will shortly take up his residence at Tauherenikau, where he will have a good team of horses in his charge. With Form Up and Warmth to commence with, "Paddy" promises to do well. The Otago Steeplechase furnished what is probably a unique incident in cross-country racing. Of the ten startters, only Stone Ginger and Falladio completed the course without mishap, and, after a great battle, ran a deadheat," or a "dead beat," to be exact. Alt Shearsby is taking Nita, Sleight of Hand, and Reformation to Hastings this week Wonder when they will slip the pre-stidigitateur? Roy Reed u'as the only jockster to ride more than one winner at Otaki, his brace of victories bringing his total up to 38. H. Gray was successful once at Ellerslie, and lie canters on well ahead with 58 wins. A southern scribe considers that Dingle was well sold at 500 guineas. On Wanganui form thi3 statement looks all right, but wait till the *big fellow strikes a drv course, and there may be a different tale to tell. Last year Bon Reve was considered a rod m pickle for the Great Northern Hurdles, but his party overlooked the final payment. They waited a long while to get even, but everything comes to those who wait —when they say the magic word- Bon Reve's party threw in for a royal win, and Mr H. Neagle's share of the stake-money distributed at the meeting was £I2OO.
Poor old KirUby came to a sad end in the Otago Steeples. After falling three times, the old fellow struggled in and dropped dead from sheer exhaustion. His gameness deserved a better fate. Arrowfield was voted a moral for the Birthday Welter at Otaki, but he began badly, and at the home turn was so far behind that his backers felt like tearing up their tieTTets. In the straight the imported horse came with a marvellous run, and gained second place two lengthy behind Retard I'rimato, as expected, won the Maiden rather easily. There was considerable merit in his performance, as he looked well out of it in the early stages. Broad Arrow, who is reported to be as good as Nobleman, broken down in the race. Expedition ran a good second to Arlington on Tuesday, and should pay his way on the East Coast. Sandy Paul is nicely treated in the Gisborne Steeples with 11.2, and the opposition is only moderate. Torchlight is coming on fast now and is worth keeping in mind.
