AUSTRO-GERMANY.
CONVICTS CONSCRIPTED. Amsterdam, June 5. Hindenbug, despite the Kaiser's opposition, persuaded the Government to introduce a Bill in the Reichstag drafting into the army convicts of military age. These will be constituted special regiments, commanded by officers known for ruthlessness, and sent to the most dangerous points. Many shirkers have committed crimes in order to be imprisoned and so escape army service.—Aus. N.Z. Cable Assoc. SHORTAGE OF FOOD. WORKERS' DISSATISFACTION. Received June 6, 2.45 p.m. Copenhagen. June 5. The Austrian Socialist Congress has issued a proclamation warning the Government of the danger from the working classes' excitement, which will be heightened if the food supplies are not improved and people get the impression that the Central Powers are fighting for imperialistic aims. The Arbiter Zeitung states that when the sanguinary battle on the Western front is concluded it will convince people that no victory can bring peace.— Press Assoc.
