THE WAR
MOTHER COUNTRY: BRITISH SHIPBUILDING. ! BETTER RESULTS ATTAINED. London, June 5. The Admiralty announces that 197,274 tons of merchantmen were completed during May, compared with 111,533 tons in April. The Admiralty comments on the satisfactory output, which is a great credit to the whole industry, especially to the firms engaged in fitting out vessels. Efforts to reduce the period between launching and completion have produced satisfactory results. The average time of putting out has been considerably reduced. For example a 6000-ton steamer was completed in 19 days after she was launched. The acceleration of putting out increased the output in May.—Aus. Ht.Z. Cable Association and Reuter. The figures for British shipbuilding and losses are as follow: 1918 Completions ' Losses Gross Tons Gross Tons January . 58;568 February , 100,038 March ... 161,674 216,709 April .... 115,533 220,709 May 197,274 THE BILLING CASE. i STRONG CRITICISM. ■ , p London, June 5. Several newspapers sharply criticise Mr. Justice Darling's weakness, and denounce the accusations against politicians as another gross scandal. The Daily News says the question whether Miss Allan was libelled has been lost in the maze of wild charges against everybody and anybody, supported by witnesses whose evidence suggested the madhouse or comic opera. Mr. Billing's real purpose is the destruction of the reputations of public men who have served the nation with honor. The trial marks the culmination of the cowardly intrigue and slander directed against Mr. Asquith and his associates during the past three years. Mr. J. Thomas, in view of the serious consequences which may follow the trial, protests against the charges that British statesmen are corrupt traitors, and declares that the reckless assertions are entirely unsupported by evidence but may well have a disturbing effect on the public—Aus. N.Z. Cable Assoc.
