ON THE SEA.
U-BOATS OFF NEW JERSEY COAST. SEVERAL VESSELS SUNK. CHASERS DISPATCHED. New York, June 3. One steamer and several smaller craft have been sunk off the Jersey coaßt by German submarines. The ships were attacked during the night. Outgoing ships have been stopped. It is believed half a dozen vessels have been sunk. The eastern ports are closed, and there are no sailings. The crews of several craft have been rescued and landed. Two U-boats have been seen.—Aus. N.Z. Cable Assoc. According to Captain H. G. Newcombe, of the steamer Cole,, a submarine 'was sighted on Sunday afternoon 300 yards away. It fired a-shot across his bows, circled its victim, sent men on board, and sank the Cole with bombs. He crew escaped in small boatß, and were picked up by the American steamer Bristol and brought to New York. One U-boat was last seen chasing a vessel. The Navy Department was apprised of the sinking on Sunday, and dispatched chasers and other naval vessels to the vicinity. The Cole was a collier, bound from Boston to Portland. The closing of the Atlantic ports has caused a sensation. The passenger steamer City of Columbus was torpedoed. An S.OJS. call was received from the steamer Caroline, a Porto Rican liner, which was attacked by submarines. Later fifteen vessels were submarined. —Aus. N.Z. Cable Assoc.
IRISH FISHING FLEET DECIMATED. London, June 3. A submarine on Thursday night attacked the Irish fishing fleet off the coast of County Down (near Belfast), and sank 12 out of 40 boats before she watf interrupted.—Renter.
