WATERSIDE COMMISSION.
NAPIER SITTINGS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Napier, June 3. The Waterside Accidents Commission sat here to-day. The harbormaster gave evidence that there should be Government inspection of lightering gear monthly, instead of once a year as. at present. The Horibor Board secretary said there had been eight minor acci* dents here in two and a-half years. Not any of these were serious, and none were due to defective gear. If the board overtook the whole of the work in the port, a better .system could- be provided. WiMiam Beelbe said the men were handling less cargo per hour* now than three years ago. The shipping companies' foreman knew of no accident due to defective gear. Captain Alien, foreman for Richardson's, thought.local lighters did not carry sufficient life-sav-' ing appliances. There was no tendency to overlook. Wallace, Richardson's superintendent, said all the firm's vessel* had the necessary life-saving equipment.
