German newspapers pullieh statistics showing that the indirect German shipping losses during the war have been approximately 800 vessels, totalling 2,800,000 tons, more than half the total of their pre-war tonnage. It it stated the German shipyards arc btttily constructing many merchantmen. Large shipping companies have 050,000 tons constructing, including seven vessels of over 30,0(10 tons and four of the largest freight carriers in the world. ; Critics reeall that when the Reichstag recently discussed a Bill providing for State subsidies for the shipping companies, Socialist deputies declared that all mercantile construction had ' cented early in the war. and had not resumed, the shipyards being exclusively engaged in ' naval construction, whilst ' two-thirds of the shipwrights had been called tip for military service.
