SOLDIERS' DAY.
A SUCCESSFUL EFFORT.
OVER £2OO RAISED.
The appeal organised By the Now Plymouth Women's Patriotic Committee for tho purpose of raising funds for the carrying on of their regular work of providing comforts for soldiers, was an unqualified success, tlie sum of about £530 being raised. The centre of operations was the shop lately occupied by Messra. May and Arrowsmitih, and kindly lent by the New Zealand Clothing Factory, Ltd. AVlhen the shop opened on Saturday morning its shelves and fixtures literally groaned under the weight of things which had been given to help tie effort. The "wibite elephants" were a source of mucih curiosity. They were placed in the tack room of the shop, and were in charge of a numlber of ladies. They ranged from gorgeous cheese covers to smajll cups, and most of the "elephans" were of a breakable character. There were, in addition, crockery, plain and fancy goods, and flower stalls, and a very heavily-stocked stall of Is surprise parcels. These parcels were very readily disposed of, and accounted for a sum of £SO 10s. The flower stall did brisk business, and had to be re-fur-nislied many times during the day. The ladies had on view at the National Bank corner somo specimen parcels of those 1 sent away tfy the men at tihe front and the pulblic were invited to mate special half-crown donations, thereby entitling each conifcriibutor of suah an amount to have his or her name writt-ten. on one of the committee's cards which is enclosed in every parcel sent away.
