WATERSIDE ACCIDENTS.
COMMISSION TAKES EVIDENCE AT LYTEBJON. Christcliuroh, May 28The Commission of Inquiry into Accidents on the Waterfront sat at Lyttelton to-day. Evidence was given by waterside \frorke rs of long experience as to the state of gear i n ships trading to the port. Generally, it-was stated that the winches in some ships were in bad order, the brakes acting improperly, wliilo the lighting system was in many cases was bad. An improvement on the hook used on coal toskets was necessary, [n several cases hatches were too short, and had to be kept up with wedges on bits of wood. The fore and aft hatch liars should bo iron-shod to obviate the risk of accidents through wear and tear. Spliced running gear, it was claimed, should not be used, and all ladders in hatches should be direct from tlie top to the bottom. Defects in certain ships were specified which it was contended should be remedied. In every cose where complaint had been mado repairs and improvements had been effected.
