CONFERENCE OF DOMINION PREFERS. CALLED BY KING GEORGE. Received May 29, 5.5 p.m. Washington, May 28. King George has called a conference of Dominion Premiers to determine British war policies and quotas of men and money, also to consider the voice of each Dominion at the peace table. THE FOOD PROBLEM. London, May 2S. The Daily Express says that the Food Ministry considers that the bread supply in Britain is definitely assured until next harvest. The policy of extracting the largest proportion of wheat during milling and the admixture of other cereals has been equivalent to saving onethird of the average yearly importation, without apparently affecting health. Already the proportion of wheat extraction has been twice lowered and further reductions will be made when this can safely be done. A number of Danish farm workers will shortly be available to work on English farms. The Press Bureau reports that the April census shows that the total acreage of -wheat in England and Wales is the highest recorded since 1882, the area in barley the highest recorded by 20 per cent., and the area under potatoes the highest recorded by 27 per cent. The Director-General of Food 'Production states that the net saving of shipping resulting from the increasing production of corn and potatoes in England and Wales alone should amount in the coming year to 1J million tons.—Aus. N.Z. Cable Absoc. and Reuter. MINERS ON STRIKE. London, May 28. The West Monmouth mines are idle, 17,000 miners having struck because the pay of twenty men was stopped at Hollybnsh whilst they carried a dead comrade home. The men claim that this is contrary to the coalfields practice.—Times.
