SOLDIERS' DEPENDENTS.
To the Editor. Sir, —I notice by your journal that I you take a kindly interest in tho welfare of soldiers' dependents. Will you allow me through your columns to point out an error in a circular just issued by the Defence Minister containing a comparative statement of allowances paid to soldiers' dependents in various countries —issued, presumably to show the generous scale of allowances paid in New Zealand. According to the circular, the total allowances paid to a soldiers' wife with one child are three pounds, six shillings and sixpence. As a matter of fact, the allowances paid to a soldier's wife with one child in this district (April payment) are as follow:—Wife's allowance 21s, child's allowance 7s, allocation from husband's pay 21s; total allowance 49s In on» specific case—the Minister is very partial to "specific" cases—the wife obtained from that inept body known as the Financial Assistance Board a rent allowance of 15s, subsequently reduced to ss; total allowance in that case 545. Can it be that the Minister has again been "misinformed," or is it a deliberate attempt to throw dust in the eyes of tho Second Divisionist? 'Tacts are chiels that winna ding!"—l am, etc.. FACTS. Manaia, 24th May.
