ON THE SEA.
GERMAN "CRUISER" SUBMARINE SUNK. - ■ -. ■ I London, May 26. The Admiralty reports: Our Atlantic escort of submarines reports that in longitude 11 degrees, off Cape St. Vincent,, she sank a German submarine of the so-called "cruiser type." There were no survivors. Another enemy submarine has been destroyed. ■ The Admiralty has decided to depart from the rule of not announcing the destruction of individual enemy submarines.—Aus. N.Z. Cable Assoc, and Reuter. ZEEBRUGGE AND OSTEND USELESS. London, May 26. The Germans have succeeded in shifting the position of the Vindictive, leaving a passage barely sufficient for a large destroyer, but the harbor at present is not used.
Attempts have been made at Zeebrugge, but fruitlessly, to dredge a passage between the two sunken vessels. The Bruges basin is full of ships, and many have been sent back to Germany. The effect of the blockage on the submarine campaign is not yet visible. SUBMARINE RAMMED. New York, May 2». A loaded American transport going to France rammed a submarine while steaming at the rate of twenty-five knots per hour. The vessel saved 18 of the U-boat's erew.—Aus. N.Z. Cable Association. U-BOATS IN SPANISH PORTS. Madrid, May 26. A German submarine. U-65, entered Sanknder in a damaged condition. The simultaneous arrival of two submarines in Spanish ports is regarded as proof of the activity of the Spanish patrol, also that the high seas are becoming more dangerous for submarines. Some of the crew of U65 were wounded, and the vessel's motors were badly damaged. U4B, which was interned in Fcrrol in March, attempted to escape, but a Spanish cruiser stopped her. The authorities disembarked the crew and dismantled the engines.
German submarines have sunk 67 Spanish ships of 150,000 tons, killing 52 Spaniards. The figures have created widespread indignation.—Aus. N.Z. Cable Assoc.
