A PENNY TRAIL CHALLENGE. By Telegraph.-—Press Association. Wellington, May 27. Final conditions have been agreed upon under which Auckland accepts a challenge from Wellington to lay a "popper trail" on the Main Trunk line 1 from one city to the other, a distance of, 426 miles, in aid of the Red Cross funds. Wellington has undertaken to lay pennies on one rail of the line to Auckland, whale Auckland is laying pennies to Wellington on the other rail. The amount the winner will require to lay is £93,657 10s. The conditions of the contest, which is to be known as the "Wellington Copper-trail Challenge to Auckland," provide that a line shall be drawn along the northern boundaries of Clifton, Whangamomona, and Kaitieki, then along the southern boundary of East Taupo, and thence along the northern boundary of Wairoa to Paritu on the east coast; the towns of Taumarunui and Upper Mobaka being deemed to be north of the line as drawn. This line represents, according to the Government Statist, a fair division of the North Island on a basis of population. All territory north of this dividing-line will be called tho Auckland fighting area, and all the territory south of the line will be called the Wellington fighting area. (This means that Taranaki, being south of the Mokau River, which forms part of the boundary of the Clifton County, is in the Wellington area) For the purpose of the challenge, ten pennies go to the foot, or a half-crown to the yard, and so on. On Saturday of each week the contesting parties will publicly announce what mileage of the line has been covered. The contest commences on June 1, 1&18, and closes on October 18, 1918, or at such time a* either of the contestants reaches theoo s iposite goal.
