RAILWAY SORTING CHARGES.

WANGANUI DEPUTATION TO THE MINISTER. . ' By Telegraph.—#resa Association. Wanganui, Last Night. The Minister of Railways (the Hon. Hemes) met a deputation from the Harbor Board, -Chamber of Commerce, and importers here to-night in regard to tile sorting charge of Is 6d per ton imposed by the Department at a number of small ports, including Wanganui. The deputationists urged the Minister to remit the charge, as the impost would mean diverting the coastal shipping to Wellington, with a corresponding reduction of local harbor revenue. Mr. Herries explained that the charge was a fair one to cover the cost of sorting goods. He said the charge could not be remitted, but was prepared to discuss the Wanganui Harbor Board taking control of the local wharves and sheds at a rental to he fixed by arbitration. In reply to a deputationist, who said' the Railway Department originally commandeered the local water front by Gazette notice, Mr. Herries replied that the land was the property of the Crown and not any local community. It could not be handed over gratia.

A further conference is to be held tomorrow between the Minister and the Harbor Board to discuss the basis for negotiations for local control.
