WANGANUI NOTES. - (By ''Moturoa.") •Despite disagreeable weather conditions, a great crowd rolled up at Wang!,rmi on Thursday, and an excellent day's sport was served up for patrons. The course was in a holding condition, and along the back the going was worse, but the various events were got off without serious accident. Taranaki horses were there in force, and had a fairlv good nin, Rawakore, Collector, Volo, and Winning Shot paying good dividends. Rawakore appeared to be a triflo unlucky to lose the Borough Handicap, and Collector beat all but Sir Fisher in the Century Hurdles. Sir Fisher won in hollow fasnion, and it would have taken a good horse to beat him on Thursday. Volo slipped the field in the Connolly Handicap four furlongs from home, and was never afterwards troubled- Instead of stopping, him, tSie heavy going appeared to be in his favor. Winning Shot took first money in the concluding event, but from the stand Lord Nelson appeared to win by a good half-length. Followers of the Taranaki quartette collected thankfully. The weather cleared tip nicely before the first race—the Borough Handicap—and Huslhman and Bivouac were the only withdrawals, leaving a splendid field of 17. The bracketed pair, Lady Black and Galore, carried a ton of money, and Lady General, Simonides, and Charley were best backed of the others. The field moved off in lino, and Hyginas quickly ran into tie lead, followed by Staccato, Coropet, and Starengo. Hy : ginas gave way to Staccato approaching the bend, and Rawakore and Galore im'proved their positions. Rawakore assumed command in the straight, but her rider was not quite equal to the occasion, and Galore just got up in time to win by a neck. The winner would have paid a tall price but for being bracketed with Lady Black. Rawakoro's 'backers received a wonderful dividend, the black mare standing to .pay well over £t quarter of a century to win. Lady General finished fast, a head away, and then came Form Up, Coro-pet, and Coolpan. Fourteen lined up for the Hack. Steeples, Idealism having a slight call over Torchv and Kaupokonui in the betting. Zetes led over the first mile, but ran. off at the stand and brought Brown Joe and Martineljo to grief. Idealism was left in front, but four furlongs from home Onipoto took t'lie lead and won easily from Gaekwar, Companion, and Korero. The Diver fell, giving A. M'D-onald a bad shaking and concussion. The distance found Idealism out, while the fences stopped seven out of the fourteen runners. Golden Glow was the only withdrawal from the Wanganui Steeples, leaving 11 runners. Retting was faiTly even, Coalition, Braeiburn, Gluepot, and Marto n being the public's elect- Arlington made the early running from Bore, Gluepot, and Nita. Bore fell at tlio hencoop, and the order then was Arlington, Nita, (■luepoi, Braeburn, Master Strowan, and Mart-oil. The next round saw Marton in front, followed by Braeburn, Mastei -Strowan, and Sandy Paul. Braeburu took the lead at tlir. iive-luvlongs posf, and Master Strowan ran up to Marton. Braeburn came to the last hurdle slightly in advance of Master Strowan, and, finishing gamely, won by a bare halflength. Marlon was four lengths away third, and Sandy Paid, Coalition, Nita, snd Arlington next BiaeJuirn's victory was very popular, but both Mastc* Strowan and S'andv Paul should he all the better for the gallop. -Heavy rain fell prior to the Kaitoka Hack Hurdles, but 15 lined up, and the public backed Paul Moore as if it was all over. Gang jlua' led over 'the first jump, but was steadied, and the order passing the stand was Dasher Bop Waioture, Midf"\ght Star, Paul Moore, gnd Gang AwC. Along the back L Midnight Star ran to the front, and Paul Moore improved hi 3 position. Midnight Star had too much pace for the opposition in the run home, and scored comfortably from Gold Fran, Paul Moore, Waioture, and Gang Awa'. The lastnamed jumped better than anything in the race, and Js worth following.
All stf-j-ted in the Century Hurdles, Sir Flslier, Colorado, and Fursefiller can-rim; the money. Putsefliler tot »
merry pace for nearly two miles, but Sir Fisher quickly settled her, and won comfortably from Collector and Goldeij tilade.,- Then came Pursefiller, Stvrax, Colorado, and Vacuum. The Connolly Handicap was contested by a nice field of 11, and was an even betting race- Hydras was' the actual favorite, but Paraoa, Lady Louisa, Teka, and Volo were also welt backed. Hushman made t'lie early running, followed by Moutoa Queen,. Cleft, and. Volo. The lattei"'ran tl'.r-bugh four furlongs from, home, and won comfortably by a length from Lady Louisa, who just beat Hydriis. " Zolft and Paraoa finished next. Heavy rain fell while the Pnrua Hack" Race was run. Rude was a hot favorite, but did not begin well. 'Winning Shot was always prapiinenj;, and got the decision, though most people consider that Lord Nelson, who finished- , under tile judge's box, won by half a length. Both paid goo<l prices.
By Telegraph—Special to News. Wanganki, Last Night. Heavy showers fell all day, and the track is likely to (be heavy for the concluding day's racing. Acceptances are again good. The .proceedings open with the Winter Oats Handioaip, for which 16 are carded. Lady Black, Lady General, and Hyginag should be well backed. Lord Nelson Is favorably treated in the Balg'owhie Hantfrcap, though Paddington Green may prove dangerous. The Grand Stand Steeples should be a splendid race: Marton aiid Sandy Paul will be suited by the distance, and Diavolo will be a fresh horse and likely to run well. Golden Glade, if started, and Gang Awa', will command Tespect in the Rata Hurdles. Golden Glade is also well treated in the May Hurdles, and no complaint can be found with the weight apportioned to the two top-weights. Volo i 8 giving awav a lot of wefght in the Empire Handicap, but may prove equal to tlio task. iHydrua snay be his hardest opponent. The Farewell Hack Handicap looks very open, - Charley. Tbex, and Flying Gowrie being .much-discussed candidates. Form Up was purchased by Mr H. W. Brown, the owner of Warmth, the price being 420 guineas. Gluepot, Gold Fran, and Collector, who competed at AVanganui oil the first day, the two latter paying dividends, were railed through to. New Plymouth yesterday to be shipped north in readiness for the Great Northern meeting. As the Rarawa could not negotiate the Onehunga bar the trio will have a forceil stay hero till Tuesday night.
