DISTRICT NEWS.

PUKEKGAHU. (From Our Own Correspondent). After a spell of very fine weather, which has kept the cows milling later than usual, and the pastures green, rain and wind, in the usual Taranaki stylo. Lave come again, bring- ng to a close another successful dairying season; am! I.he closing of our new factory for the winter. One wonders whether the. dilectors of the Stratford Dairy Co., realised the great benefit they wore conferring on the Pukengahu valley when they refused to meet the supplier.* to the Old Robsnn Road creamery and insdal a clwca plant for them, and let another company come in and build an up-to-date cheep factory in the centre of the valley, on the Waihapa Road, thereby being the means of having that road metalled right through and on which there are to be at leat two new houses built before next milking season commences. Along tiiis newly metalled road yon can see even' morning a troop of ponies and children Vending their way to the new, and also irp-to-datc school in comfort. There is f. real live school committee, and lately a social committee has been formed for the purpose of getting up social functions during the winter months, the main object being to 'raise funds, for the improvement of the schocl grounds, erect swings, and do all possible for the. amusement and recreation of children (of whom there are now close upon sixty) and so make country life a pleasure to them. Our first social of the season was held last Friday evening, when between i-ixty and seventy gathered at the school. The majority played euchre until after ten o'clock. The prizes were won by Miss flickev and Mr. Wilson. After partaking of a nice supper I provided by the committee, dancing was commenced and carried on with .srreat ' vigor until 2 a in., bringing to a close \ the liveliest meeting ever held here. I The committee is to lie congratulated ! on its first social, and it is hoped Ihat ! all the settlers will roll up every fortn!rrht to help a lood cav.se, and try and win the points prizes that will be given at this end of the winter.
