SCHOOL COMMITTEE. Mr. P. J. McDonald presided at the meeting of the school committee held last evening. Others present were: Mrs. T. White and Messrs E. G. Foster, E. Tichbon, D. Clarke, W. Pinhev, and D. McMillan. The chairman wrote regretting beintr unable to be present, and also statiDg that he was donating his out-of-pocket expenses (incurred in his trip to Wellington in connection with the High School site) to special prizes, after consultation with Mr. TyTer.-A vote of sympathy was passed to Mr. Boon in his illness. and thanks for his donation. The secretary of the Home Defence" Corps stated that his committee had decided to donate £ll 5s 7d to the School Committee for improvements to the school, and that the rifles and property go to the local school cadets for their use.—Donations received with the heartiest thanks.

PRESENTATION TO MR. BOWLER. At the school yesterday, Mr. Bowler, who left for camp this' morning, was presented en behalf of the teachers and scholars in the secondary department wi'.h a set of military hair-brushes and case, suit aldy inscribed, a leather r.oc.ketbook by the girls, and gold-mounted fountain pen by the bows. Masters. ehairnan of the Education Board, stated that whilst lie regretted that Mr. Bowler was severing his connection with the school, he admired the spirit that I prompted him to volunteer for the front. The speaker then stated that Mr. Bowler had entered the school in IHO3 as a scholar, was a junior teacher in 1907. gained his I'-.A. degree in 11)10. and was appointed first assistant master in Mil. A dance followed, the music heing supplied by Mrs. Walsh and extras by Miss Newstroski and C. Volzke. A very enjoyable hour was snent at the patriotic rooms yesterday afternoon, when the Women.'s National Reserve entertained <he Indies who have relatives ftt the front. Vocal items were contributed by Misses Sautter and Osborne and' Messrs G. T. Walters and 'Peters, whil-t a violin solo was given by Mr. Robson. The accompaniments were in the capable hands of Mr. C. H. Fox.

The long winter evenings are to hand. So those who find time tedious will be nlcasr-d to loam that Mr. C. E. James has just opened up some fine winter pastimes—games that will instruct the child and interest the parent.
