DISTRICT NEWS.

HURFORD ROAD. (From Our Own Correspondent.) A very pleasnnt evening took place in the local school-room on April 29th, the occasion being a farewell to Miss Tobin, who has been promoted to head teacher of the Marco school. The evening was spent in cards and dancing. After supper the chairman of the School Committee, in a neat little speech, expressed the regret felt in losing Miss Tobin, who had been the school teacher here for a little over five years, during which time she had obtained good results from the children and very creditable reports from the Inspectors. He was sure she would gain success in her new sphere. On behalf of Miss Tobill, Mr A. Smith suitably replied, after which all sang '•For she a jolly good fellow," followed by "Auld Lang Syne." Our new school mistress is Miss Taylor, of this road, and late of Waverlev. The School Committee has decided to hold euchre parties with a dance to follow on alternate evenings during the winter months. Owing to so many of our young men doing their bit for their country we don't expect to have such successful dances as in the past, but the old folks all enjoy a good game of euchre. Thus we will spend a few pleasant evenings. In place of the butter factory which was burnt down some time back, the directors are having built an up-to-date ferro-conerete building, which is well under way. I understand the building and plant will cost over £3OOO. ' The new factory will be a big improvement to the district, but it is also a big undertaking, as there was only about £675 insurance on the old building. The directors, I understand, have decided not to issue new shares as payment for same, but intend paying off the principal, spread over five years. Now, if butter is not shipped regularly but stored, with a cheese factory and branches in the district, it looks as if the directors have taken on a big risk. Land seems to change rather freely on this road, Mr G. Elliott having recently sold out to Mr J. Penwarden, who was well known in Omata a few years ago, he having kept the Omata store and post office. The above mentioned farm makes the fourth one to be Bold sine* the New Year.
