A Sydney cable message reports the death of Mr. Spencer CornfoTd, the wellknown sporting writer. Mr. A. Corkill was re-elected chairman of the Moa Road Board alt the monthly meeting of the board held on Saturday. A Melbourne caible reports the death of Mr. George Hmalie, leader of the Parliamentary Labor Party, from pneumonia. Mr. C. B. Morrison, K.C., of Wellington, arrived in New Plymouth by Saturday night's mail train on business in connection with the Supreme Court. Sir Robert Stout (Chief Justice); accompanied by his associate (Mr Cooke), arrived in New Plymouth on Saturday night. The Chief Justice will preside over tlhe sitings of the Supreme Court, which open at 11 o'clock this morning. The latest hospital report contains the names of the following Taranaki men:—Dangerously ill, H- Kemp (Stratford). Severe case, H. Looney (Opunake). Not severe case, lAeutemat 6. P. Bertrand (CTremii). At Saturday's meeting of the Moa Road Board, Mr. A- E. Hayward, of New Plymouth, was appointed to the position of working overseer, in Micatasion to Mr. H. L. Hogg, wtbo hag bets' appointed engineer to the Waitoao County Council.

Mr Walter C. Hislop, ex-manager of Wyndham Dairy Factory, who left for the Dannevirke district, Hawke's Bay, about ten months ago, to assume the charge of Tamaki Dairy, Factory, Te ■Rehunga, has now been appointed gen« eral manager for the Kaponga, Dairy Company. The Rev. Clement Houohen,' M.0., ia with the draft that returned to Maoriland last week. Formerly Back Block missioner in Taranaki, he left with the original Rifle Brigade, gained the Military Cross for distinguished service on the Somme, and was wounded at Passchendaele, losing an eye. One of the oldest and most respected settlers of No'rmanlby, Mr. FeKx Hunger, pass-ed away on Friday evening at the age of 81 years. . Mr. Hunger had- been a resident of Normaniby for many years, having secured the property on which he has lived ever since aibout 1880. During his residence there he had always taken a keen interest in all movements for the advancement of Normaniby. He wa» a staunch supporter of the Horticultural Society, and for many years a member of the Town Board.-JStar. Mr. and. Mrs. W. Butler and family, who are leaving Manaia and taking up their residence in New Plymouth, were accorded a send-off by the local people last week. A presentation was made of a suitcase and travelling rug to Mr Butler and a silver salad bowl and «erors to Mrs. Butler. The local Bowling Club also presented Mr. Butler with a pair of silver-mounted bowls. Bulogistir references were made to the zeal displayed by Mr. and Mrs. Butler in every local movement, and the hope was expressed that they would find greater scope for their energy in New (Plymouth. (Private Giles, of whose death word has been received, was in the postal department at Hawera for some time. He enlisted in Australia; went through the Gallipoli campaign, and was invalided home, suffering from the effects of a w«ind in the arm. After two operations and a good deal of attention, he so far recovered that he again enlisted and served gallantly till, as already reported, he died from the effeets of having been gassed. He was highly respected in Hawera, and many friends will sympathise with the family in the loss they have sustained.—Star.
