SECOND DIVISION ALLOWANCES.
ACTION AT GTIItISTCHCRUI CITY COUNCIL,. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Monday. At l!ie city council meeting to-night, Civ 'D. 0. fu'llivau moved: That this council .condemns the mean spirit played by the (.lovermneiit towards members of the Second Division and their wives and children in the matter of allowances, and calls upon iit to immediately grant the full demands of the Second Division Leaque, and this council declares emphatically that the increase of sixpence per day in the children's allowances, decided on by the Government, is absurdly inadequate as a solution of the problem. Or. Olitoie moved as an amendment: That this Council, while condemning the resolutions passed at the recent meeting with reference to the Second Division, held m the Opera, Mouse, and, while repudiating the same as being disloyal and in no way representing the true feeling of the citizens of Christchurch, is of opinion that the present allowances to soldiers' dependents are in many eases quite inadequate, and urges the Government to deal with tire matter promptly, in order to allay the present widespread dissatisfaction. It was decided that further discussion on the matter ibe postponed till the next meeting of the council, in order not to prejudice any of the cases coming before fthe court this week.
