■» (From Our Own Correspondent.) Eltham, May 7. The first meeting of the School Committee was held last evening, all members being present, with Mr, Ira J. Bridger in the chair In welcoming the new members, Mr. Bridger commented on the punctuality of all, and hoped that augured well for future meetings, and he also mentioned incidentally that he was the first boy of the school who had become chairman, of the committee, and was congratulated by his fellow-workers and promised every assistance in carrying out the duties. The question of building up the committee's funds was revived, and it was decided to approach the municipal authorities for a picture benefit some time in the spring, members expressing the opinion that with plenty of time and pushing the sale of tickets a good financial result should be secured. A letter was received from Mr. H. W. Jackson, teacher, who was leaving fo? camp, desiring leave of absence to settle private affairs.—Leave was granted, and appreciation expressed of his work.

Mr. T. King was appointed to succeed Mr. A. Lee on the committee, as the latter is going into oamp shortly. Wishes were expressed for his safe re< turn. The question of using slates bv the vounger pimils was revived, and it was decided to inquire of the Education Board as to whether it was desirable to substitute slates for paper in the lower standards. Messrs Hurrell and Skipper, visiting committee, were instructed to ascertain from the headmaster the reason for scholars leaving for other schools during the past year. ■Mr. Bridger mentioned that C. D. Pulsford. one of the Zeahrugge heroes, was an Elthim hoy. and others who had distinguished themselves and were also frnm the school, were Lieutenant H. Wilkinson. M.C. and Behrian Croix do Guerre: Lieutenant Carl Pierce, who led the advance guard into Joppa; and Sergeant S. Foote, D.C.M. WAGES DISPUTE. The countv councils met in conference here yesterday. Cr. C. J. Belcher (Eltham Comity Council) was in the chair, and others present were:—Crs. ,T. R. Murdoch (I-lawcra C.C), J. ChristoffeU and W. J. Lo'pdcl! (engineer, Stratford C.C). T. M'Phillips and A. ,T. Hansen (engineer, Waimate West C.C), Wright and ITohlcn (Egmont C.C), W. 11. Piggo tt nndDowsett (engineer, Clifton CC.I, A. J. Campbell. A. C. Pease, and "W. Tosswill (engineer. Eltham C.C), and A. Corkill (Moa Road Hoard). Apologies were received from Cr. R Walter (Stratford CO and Taranaki C.C, the latter body holding their monthly mcctiiK' that day. The meeting was called in connection «'ith recent labor troubles. After sopie discussion, the following motions were lost:—'That the resolutions of the Taranaki Comity Councils' Conference, held at Unworn, on October 27. giving surfacemen wages P2s per day for time worked in all counties represented, ex-

cept in special circumstances, be rescinded," and "That further applications for increased wages for surfacemen ho not considered until after a further conference has heen duly called hy the chairman of Ihe Elf ham County Council or other councils concerned to consider and deal with the matter."
