UNION CO. STEAMER LOST. THE CREW SAVED Sydney, May 2. News has been received that the Union Company's steam Waihemo lias been sunk in the Mediterranean. The crew were saved. LIST OF OFFICERS. Wellington, Last Night. The torpedoed Waihemo was formerly known as the Canada Cape. When the vessel was taken over by the Imperial authorities the deck hand's, firemen, and trimmers were replaced by others in England, but the officers, engineers, and stewards were all New Zealanders. The Union has received advice" that the majority of these are en route for New Zealand. The officers are: Captain, J. Thomson; chief. D. McPherson; second, C. Atkinson; third, McKelsey; chief engineer, M. McNeil; second, J. Mclness; third, W. Ferguson; fourth, \.. Lax.

Seventy-four are reported to have been drowned. Received May 2, 11.15 p.m. . New York, May 1. Sixty-one passengers and crew, out of a total of 163 aboard the City of Athens, were saved. The steamer sank in a few minutes. A MONSTER WOODEN SHIP. CAN BE BUILT IN 30 DAYS. Received May 2, 7.15 p.mj London, May 1. The Liverpool Courier states that the biggest wooden vessel in the world, named the "War Mystery," has been launched for the Cumird Company. Her length is 315 feet and her draught 24ft. 6in. Similar boats are 1 being built by the National Shipbuilding Company of Texas, which claims to be able to construct such vessels in 30 days. TWO SMAuTcRAFT LOST. Aus. and N.Z. Cable Assoc, and Renter. Received May 2, 7.15 p.m. London, May 1. The Admiralty reports that the* sloop Cowslip war, torpedoed and sunk on April 25. Five officers and one man are missing, and are presumed to have been killed by the explosion. The torpedo-boat No. 90 foundered in heavy weather on April 25. One officer and twelve men are missing.
